The United Nations estimates that 25,000 all over the world die from malnutrition and related causes every day. And nearly 1 billion of the world’s 7 billion people go to bed hungry. Considering that by 2050 the global population is expected to grow to over 9 billion, re-imagining food security requires addressing three challenges.

  • Food Access: We produce more than enough food to feed the planet today, yet hundreds of millions starve while others struggle with obesity and nutritional imbalance.
  • Food Safety: Even with significant advances in technology and distribution, food contamination is still a large societal problem with fatal consequences.
  • Food Waste: We throw away billions of tons of food a year that rot in landfills and release methane gas into the atmosphere.

So it’s obvious, the solution is not to grow more food. It’s to make sure the food we grow makes it to the table before it spoils. Sealed Air has the expertise and the technology to assure that hard-won harvests are not lost. Our packaging solutions can double the shelf life of foods like fresh pasta and extend that of meat from days to weeks. We can enhance sanitation through the entire supply chain from farm to fork and offer education about proper food storage, handling and cooking. Our innovations help promise a growing world that its food supply will be more plentiful, safer and less wasteful.


Over 7 million children die each year from diseases that can be prevented with simple hand washing. And every year, a typical 400-room hotel generates 3.5 tons of solid soap waste. That waste either goes to landfill, or is shipped to a global recycling facility, costing hotels hefty fees. That’s why we started Soap for Hope™, which teaches at-risk communities to salvage the hotels' soap slivers and turn them into new soap bars.


Also known as Typhoon Yolanda, Haiyan came ashore in the Philippines on November 8, 2013. The storm devastated the country, and safe water was all but impossible to find. In response, Dow Chemical, Sealed Air and Pepsi-Cola Philippines Products, Inc. partnered across the supply chain to provide 300,000 liters of potable water to the particularly hard-hit Visaya region. Pepsi provided the purified water, Sealed Air made 120,000 flexible pouches, and Dow Chemical provided the polyethylene resins to create the pouches. Delivering life-saving clean water to nearly 15,000 families.


According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there were more than 837 confirmed cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV), including 291 deaths, by July 2014. And this number is continuing to grow. Furthermore, since there’s currently no medical treatment for those with MERS-CoV, preventing transmission is essential for containing the virus.

In response to this growing health concern, Sealed Air’s Diversey Care created and launched a MERS Prevention and Outbreak Response Toolkit. This resource provides knowledge and tools while highlighting key prevention strategies including hand hygiene and surface cleaning and disinfection to help address the pathogen. With this holistic approach to sustainability, Sealed Air helped provide the means to limit MERS-CoV outbreaks and prevent them from escalating to a global threat.


Linens for Life™ has a simple but powerful objective: to empower people displaced by disasters with support from Sealed Air and its hotel customers. With this program, several families in a community are able to earn a small livelihood by converting linens discarded by hotels into new and useful items that they can sell. At the same time, hotels can recycle their unwanted linens in a way that makes a real difference, helping people who have lost everything in a natural disaster and who reside in refugee camps.

Communities receive basic training on how to sew and use sewing machines donated by Sealed Air. A local charity is trained to operate the program. Once trained, they can work at a refugee camp’s communal building to give a new lease on life to the linen donated by the hotels. Items created include pillow cases, tote bags and simple clothing, which are then sold to earn a small income for the people who made them.
