Job Summary

 

Reporting to the Director, Strategic Account Project Management, the  Assist Packaging Designer will assist the design team in developing and creating new custom packaging and/or modify existing designs to provide functional and cost-effective packaging solutions for AFP customers through support of testing, creating samples, completing drawings, and working with production on FRAs.

Responsibilities

 

  • Confer with design team to provide assistance in design activities. Work with the team to support and execute on various tasks as it relates to the design of the packaging solution.
  • Collaborate with production, sales and customers to establish and evaluate design concepts for packaging products.
  • Assist with providing feedback regarding feasibility of design ideas, based on factors such as appearance, safety, function, serviceability, budget, production costs/methods. 
  • Fabricate or coordinate the fabrication of samples in wood, plastic, corrugated, or other materials using sample tables, power tools, or by hand. Based on design team instruction, modify and refine designs, using working samples, to conform with customer specifications, or production limitations.
  • Store, move, discard, and organize product samples from sales team and packaging samples from design team.
  • Read production drawings and work with member of supply chain team to complete FRA process for new P/Ns.
  • Use computer aided drafting or design (CAD) software to create or modify drawings for production or customers.
  • Complete drop testing or vibration testing per agreed upon standards.
  • Prepare technical reports and related documentation.
  • Stay abreast with industry trends to include: reading publications, attending trade showings, and studying competing products and design styles to obtain perspective and generate design concepts.
  • Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures.  Report all unsafe activities to supervisor and/or Safety personnel.
  • Perform various Ad Hoc duties related to supporting the end-to-end design phase from conception to production. Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
     

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) from four-year College or university in technical field preferred. In lieu of a degree, at least 1+ year in a manufacturing environment in a design role supporting conversion and fabrication projects or a combination of industry related training and education. 
  • Requires proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record-keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.
  • Knowledge of computer aided design CAD software; computer aided manufacturing CAM software; data base user interface and query software; optical character reader OCR or scanning software; and graphics or photo imaging software.
  • Strong mathematic skills with the ability to add, subtract multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Past experience reading and interpreting documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Past experience writing and/or reviewing routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Able to travel overnight up to 10% by land and/or air.
