Summary

The Mechanical Specialist, working within the A&I Programs Engineering team; and closely with engineers, will execute projects utilizing creative and innovative skills to ensure that Sealed Air Food Care packaging systems meet cost targets and comply with functional and technical specifications. The Mechanical Specialist will work with engineers, supply chain (both equipment manufacturing and materials manufacturing), technical sales, and technical service, in order to validate commercial performance.  This activity includes prototype building and testing at both the SEE Charlotte HQ and travel to customer sites for extended periods to perform installation, start up and ongoing testing for development.  The scope of work will encompass all phases of equipment product lifecycle from concept to continuous commercial support. The Mechanical Specialist possesses a high level of mechanical aptitude and some level of electrical experience with regards to packaging equipment, applications, and trouble-shooting/repair. 

Responsibilities

  • Equipment Prototyping/Assembly – Responsible for assembling equipment both from drawing packages and verbal instruction.  This will include both mechanical equipment features and assembly of electrical control cabinets and corresponding electrical component wiring.  Responsible for basic on-the-spot prototyping and design improvements, which include thorough knowledge of machine shop tools and machinery.
  • Equipment Testing – Participate in thorough testing and application validation of equipment.  Key attributes of testing will include hardware test set-up, assistance with data collection, root cause analysis, and corrective action at SEE HQ and at the customer sites.
  • Materials Evaluation – Performs testing on new Cryovac materials being developed for the application.  Communicating performance attributes with materials development and applications development teams.   
  • Analyzes packaging quality and production problems to determine if equipment, material or product related.
  • Assist or coordinate/supervise installation of equipment along with training customers in equipment operation, maintenance and sanitation.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree in Technology/Machine shop trade or equivalent professional experience.
  • 5+ years of hands-on equipment experience
  • Ability to meet technical challenges with creative and innovative solutions
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Exceptional problem solving abilities
  • Possesses a strong “hands-on” aptitude with regards to equipment and/or mechanisms
  • Proficient in basic machine shop tools and equipment
  • Working familiarity with Email
  • Working familiarity with Microsoft Office products
  • Requires 25-50% travel
