Job Description


We are seeking a Senior Automation Engineer to join our Global Engineering “Automation & Innovation” team. This individual will have direct ownership of large and small projects globally and will have the opportunity to make a significant impact for Sealed Air. Successful candidates will be innovative thinkers who can both understand new technology in manufacturing and be able to look at true capability and identify the right place to implement it, will be great communicators that can work across diverse teams inside and outside the business, and will possess the ability to think outside of the box and embrace change.



In this role you will be responsible for identifying & implementing new technologies, in support of the Industry 4.0 roadmap, across the manufacturing network to improve safety, quality, service and cost metrics. The Senior Automation Engineer will work independently and with a team to develop and implement “smart manufacturing” solutions to develop new capabilities within our supply chain organization. This individual must be able to develop, execute, and manage projects to include partnering with the business, purchasing, logistics, IT, and finance to ensure not only the project but also the company’s success. These skills will be applied to projects which will include industrial control system design, networking, data acquisition from industrial process systems and interfacing with business intelligence software (ERP/MES). This candidate should be comfortable using their creative and technical background to develop feasible solutions to problems where a known solution may not exist.  This is a growth position that can lead to even greater opportunities in the future. 

Primary responsibilities of the team include the following:


  • Leads the implementation and configuration of applications supporting I4.0. IT, and digitalization solutions convergence.
  • Provide project management, process introduction, and process improvement leadership.
  • Define and act on quality enhancements, service improvement and cost saving opportunities.
  • Develop automation solutions to optimize plant floor operations including process and material flow.
  • Apply strong technical skills to all facets of projects to include budgeting, planning and solution development, equipment specification, design, and startup, while coordinating with internal stakeholders, external suppliers, and contractors to complete projects on time and within budget.
  • Identify/evaluate new technologies that can be incorporated into the existing processes to improve yield, increase throughput, and/or reduce cost.
  • Configure control systems and data aggregation, storage and visualization software for analytical or troubleshooting purposes.
  • Assist IT networking teams for network, firewall configuration and troubleshooting with VLANs etc. for control system/PLC connections to network in a secure manner.
  • Modify PLC programs to implement necessary code for interfacing with I4.0 and business applications.
  • Other assignments as required.

  • Demonstrated ability and experience in automation, industrial control system design or Information Technology/Operational Technology (IT/OT) system integrations required.
  • Minimum Bachelor of Science degree in an electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science or relevant technical field from an ABET accredited university.
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience with proven accomplishment in a relevant field.
  • Must have strong written and oral communication skills, a collaborative work style and ability to effectively work with an interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability and willingness to travel is required up to 25%.
  • Must be capable of presenting optimally at various business levels and functions.


Valued Areas of Experience


  • Experience with robotics, AGV’s, and / or vision systems configuration, programming and integration.
  • Experience with 2D or 3D CAD (DraftSite/SolidWorks) for interpreting, modifying, and developing drawings.
  • Experience with designing, implementing, programming and troubleshooting control systems, including PLC/PC controllers, HMIs and industrial networks such as Ethernet IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet, Profibus.
  • Configuration of motor control systems, servo drives, variable frequency drives, and electrical distribution systems including 480V 3-phase, 110 VAC, and 24VDC systems.
  • Experience with variable frequency drives and motion control technologies.
  • Experience with controls systems, network interfaces, and various protocols for communications between devices, including computer system databases.
  • Experience with communication protocols such as OPC DA, OPC UA, MQTT, REST, etc. and software platforms for SCADA, industrial data capture, process data historians, and visualization applications.
  • Work experience in manufacturing, plastic packaging or extrusion.
