What does an IP Paralegal do?

The IP Paralegal, as a member of Sealed Air’s Global Legal Department, pro-actively identify, acquire and perfect IP assets for the company; provide business support in the form of counseling, analysis, and opinions pertaining to IP issues associated with the new and existing products; and increase IP awareness and knowledge within the company by engaging and educating company personnel in both formal and informal training sessions.

Why do we need you?

  • to use your expertise to manage IP documentation (e.g., assignments, declarations) and update internal patent and legal databases,
  • to rely on your knowledge to archive, forward, and docket tasks related to legal opinions (e.g., invalidity opinions, freedom to operate opinions, infringement assessment), patent litigation, and patent oppositions before the European Patent Office
  • because you are able to proactively initiate, revise, and implement processes for patent-related procedures, including those under ISO Quality systems, such as freedom to operate analysis and new inventions management. 
  • because we can count on assistance to evaluate, adopt, and implement IP group’s data management system to facilitate paperless patent prosecution and other IP files for group-wide sharing and electronic filing, establish best practices and procedures for the same, 
  • because we trust your ability to initiate confidentiality agreements (and other IP-related agreements such as joint development and license agreements) by preparing initial drafts based upon information from the intake form and client follow-up questioning, critically reviewing and revising proposed contracts, submitting and discussing the proposals with the patent attorney and other involved counsel to end up with final texts, manage negotiations with the other Party, 
  • you can manage and update the contracts database; train others in its use; retrieve information and generate reports as needed.

Qualifications:

  • You are an experienced assistant/administrator in companies or law firms (having work experience in IP departments or in documents/contracts management roles are appreciated)
  • You have general IP knowledge and experience, ideally from legal practice.
  • You are Computer literate. 
  • You are Fluent in English, preferably basic knowledge of German or French. 
  • You have acquired excellent organizational skills and efficiency. 
  • You are precise, reliable, proactive, and able to work on your own initiative, even under pressure.
  • You have a genuine interest to learn, sharing knowledge, and working as part of a team of paralegals and patent attorneys.
