Sealed Air is undergoing a transformational change whereby we are seeking a motivated Research & Development Leader to work with a team of R&D scientists/engineers, supply chain and business partners within APAC region to innovate and implement Sealed Air’s solutions in support of our global sales of $4.7billion.

 

We have an immediate career opportunity for an APAC Innovation and Development Director at our state-of-the art R&D labs and Packaging Design Centers in Asia.  This person will become the strategy partner to help grow our Protective Packaging business within the APAC region. Under the general direction of APAC Innovation & Development Executive Director, this person will lead our technical efforts focused on growing, supporting, and developing new sustainable packaging solutions with our regional business leaders.  The responsibilities will include managing new innovation & development projects and several packaging design & application centers in Asia and a team of personnel charged with developing new products, evaluating competitive solutions, developing appropriate application solutions, and validating packaging solutions according to the required International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) guidelines.

Job Responsibilities
  • Developing employees’ technical and professional depth in the technical areas of Protective Packaging Material Solutions, Package Testing, and Customer Intimacy as well as developing their professional competencies aligning with Sealed Air’s core values and behavioral competencies.
  • Lead a group of R&D engineers and Packaging Design and Application Testing Engineers focused on developing new production development capable of supporting current markets as well as identified adjacencies.  Lead this same team to develop expertise in material interaction on the equipment platforms for both internal and customer site evaluations to aid in development and commercialization.
  • Partner with the regional Supply Chain network and external manufacturers to develop new packaging solutions.
  • Provide thought leadership as senior leader focused on material solutions that allow Sealed Air to come up with the next break through innovations in material science.
  • Serve as a strategic partner to the teams of Marketing & Portfolio, Sales, Finance, Manufacturing, and Purchasing to both develop and deliver the entire strategy that is required to support the totality of the business.
  • Work with the applications team to develop, design, and run trials that validate the reliability of the equipment, materials, and their interactions in order to provide the most robust solution to our customers.
  • Lead the creation of value-propositions and competitive intelligence for Sealed Air’s developmental solutions driving credible project definition and scoping documents.
  • Develop and lead front end intelligence gathering on the customer’s floor driving the next innovations for Sealed Air.
  • Prioritize projects/tasks and motivate employees to accomplish objectives timely with high quality.
  • Interview, hire, coach, and develop direct reports.
  • Participate in merger and acquisition strategies for Sealed Air’s as required.
  • Work effectively within a matrix managed organization
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer Science, Material Engineering or a related Technical Discipline.
  • Prior technical management roles with direct people supervision.
  • 8 or more years with expertise in research, development, and/or manufacturing in the fields of extrusion, chemistry, and/or applications involving packaging solutions.
  • Demonstrated success in building high performance teams and attracting/retaining best-in-class technical and leadership talent.
  • Proven track record of opportunity identification and translating ideas into significant commercial success.
  • Proven business acumen that allows collaboration across functions, regions, and business segments.
  • Ability to work globally with appropriate sensitivities to cultures, business practices, etc.
  • English proficiency is a must, proficiency in Mandarin or another language and/or the ability to learn another language would be an advantage.
  • Travel expectations both domestic and international up to 25%.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s or PhD degree in a technical discipline is preferred.
  • Certified Green Belt in Design for Six Sigma
  • Certified Project Management Professional (PMP)
