Job Description

The individual will work under the direction of the Packaging Engineer to take a creative, systems approach to investigate new and innovative packaging processes and materials for the packaging of Sealed Air products.  The co-op student will work closely with Packaging Engineering, independently, and in conjunction with other engineers, plant managers, production superintendents, packaging suppliers, and/or production and maintenance personnel both in-house and at customer level in analyzing and developing solutions.


  • Conduct packaging trials, validate and qualify new packaging suppliers and materials
  •  Manage individual packaging development projects and assist with on-going Packaging Engineering projects
  • Develop Packaging Shipping Standards and Specifications to prevent damage, reduce cost, and improve customer satisfaction
  •  Work in coordination with Region Sites to reduce package waste and increase packaging effectiveness with new materials
  • Partner with the sites and Sustainability coordinators to develop new methods to dispose of package waste, lowering cost and improving our Sustainability footprint
  • Investigate carrier management and claims administration to reduce in-transit damage
  • Work with vendors (both approved and potential) to develop concepts and prototype containers
  • Coordinate trials with logistics, quality, manufacturing, safety, scheduling and engineering to ensure transparency in validation
  • Create standard work instructions for packaging solutions to be rolled out throughout entire North American supply chain
  • Follow up and audit the implemented solutions to ensure compliance
  • Assist in populating/managing Packaging & Logistics Website to properly communicate SOP’s & changes that effect production


Education: Working towards a Bachelor's degree in packaging engineering, packaging science, or related discipline from a four-year college or university


Required Skills/Training:

  • Demonstrate flexibility within a high-performance work environment and matrix managed organization
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with professional presentation and negotiation skills
  • Ability to work with and evaluate varied packaging processes and materials
  • Utilize statistical techniques and tools to solve problems
  •  Must demonstrate the ability to work independently and focus on critical project parameters that determine success or failure
  • Self-starter capable of working independently with minimal supervision
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, CapePack, and Solidworks preferred
  • Ability to travel up to 25%


Safety Requirements:

  • Work around rotating equipment, hot polymers, and high noise environments
  • Required to wear safety shoes as well as standard PPE
  • Exposed to various chemicals throughout the site
  • Comply with all established facility safety rules and policies
  • Attend and participate in monthly safety meetings
  • Report unsafe conditions or injuries immediately
