Job Description
Under the direction of the Plant Manager, the Operations Manager (Value Stream Leader) is a key leadership position with direct management responsibility for multiple departments within the plant. This position oversees up to 300 indirect reports and 2 direct report supervisors (Group Performance Leaders), driving performance across manufacturing processes through continuous improvement initiatives. The primary focus is on achieving and sustaining profitable growth by optimizing the entire value stream. The Value Stream Leader will be responsible for developing and executing strategies to enhance safety, quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. This role requires a deep understanding of Lean methodologies, structured problem-solving techniques, and the ability to navigate shifting priorities with a strong sense of urgency. Note that comparable Job Titles in other organizations may include “Production Superintendent”, “Operations Superintendent”, and/or “Value Stream Manager”.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Safety & Compliance: Ensure all operations comply with safety, environmental, food safety, and quality standards. Foster a culture of safety, ensuring employees adhere to all required protocols and participate in safety training.
- Operational Leadership: Direct and manage all activities related to manufacturing operations in accordance with the company’s business plan, strategic goals, and global supply chain objectives. Focus on safety, quality, cost-effectiveness, and employee engagement across all operations.
- Lean Problem Solving & Continuous Improvement: Lead Lean initiatives by driving Kaizen events to systematically improve processes, eliminate waste, and enhance production capabilities. Lead teams in the identification of root causes and development of sustainable solutions to operational challenges.
- Employee Engagement & Training: Engage and empower employees through Lean initiatives, encouraging ownership of improvements, and providing the necessary training and development to elevate operational performance. Foster a culture of continuous learning, employee involvement, and team collaboration.
- Production Planning & Resource Management: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to set both short- and long-term production goals, while managing material, space, equipment, and personnel needs. Develop and implement processes and procedures to ensure seamless operations and achievement of performance goals, considering budget constraints and operational costs.
- Performance Monitoring & Adjustment: Continuously monitor production performance against established goals using KPIs. Adjust resources (e.g., personnel, equipment, materials) as necessary to optimize output, maintain product quality, and ensure cost-efficiency.
- Team Leadership & Development: Provide direct leadership and mentoring to Group Performance Leaders and Shift-Leads, ensuring they have the resources and guidance necessary to oversee day-to-day operations. Foster a high-performance culture through accountability, collaboration, and continuous development.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with other departments (e.g., Quality, Engineering, Supply Chain) to ensure alignment and collaboration in achieving organizational goals. Maintain open communication regarding operational performance, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.
- Adaptability & Flexibility: Effectively manage conflicting priorities in a fast-paced environment. Respond proactively to changes in production schedules, equipment downtime, and resource availability.
Qualifications
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a related field required.
- Minimum of 8 years of relevant manufacturing work experience, with at least 4 years in a leadership role.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Operational Competencies: Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team, generating results with minimal guidance from management.
- Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively present information and negotiate.
- Problem-Solving: Expertise in using DMAIC or PDCA problem-solving frameworks and applying Lean tools to solve complex operational challenges.
- Leadership & Flexibility: Must be adaptable, innovative, and comfortable in setting priorities and navigating changing conditions.
- Lean Expertise: Strong understanding of Lean manufacturing principles, with experience leading Kaizen events and implementing continuous improvement programs in high-volume operations.
- Safety & Compliance: Adherence to EHS, Quality, and Food Safety procedures. Completion of required training in these areas.
- Organizational Skills: Strong organizational and planning abilities, with the capability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Change Agent: Proven ability to drive change initiatives and foster a continuous improvement culture within teams.
- Communication of Strategic Goals: Communicate the company’s strategic objectives and vision for the site. Align the department’s goals with the broader organizational mission and set clear, measurable performance expectations for the team.
